Winner of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing
Congratulations to Molly Nehring for being selectd as a 2017-18 Colorado Affiliate Winner of the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. Molly is being recognized for her computing-related aspirations and for her demonstrated, outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology/computing; solid leadership ability; good academic history; and plans for post-secondary education.
2018 SLV Regional Science Fair
Monte Vista High School was represented by twelve students this year, and they did a fantastic job presenting their research on March 2nd at Adams State University.
Thanks to all of the parents, administration, board members, and particularly high school staff members who accommodated, encouraged, and supported these students! We are extremely proud of them all!! Bill Metz Elementary and MVMS also received a tremendous list of awards and recognitions, demonstrating once again that Monte Vista is a leader in STEM and academics!!

Government Students to Meet Colorado Representative
Government students along with Mr. Stevenson and Ms. Johnson went on a field trip to Denver on March 1st to visit The CELL (Counterterrorism Education Learning Laboratory). There they learned about what terrorism is, how to possibly detect it, what changes have been made to our government due to terrorism, and some other important information. They also went to the State Capitol Building for a tour where they were told about the the history of the building and its design. A local Representative from La Jara, Donald Valdez, had heard that we were coming, and he stopped in to speak with our kids.
Meet the Rattlers
The Rio Grande Composite Rattlers Mountain Biking Team was formed and competed this fall. There are a total of 8 students: three from Monte Vista, three from Alamosa, and two from Sargent.
They competed in the Colorado High School Mountain Biking League. They were one of 74 teams in the league from Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. There were over 1300 riders in the league in 2017. and two of the Rattlers qualify for the State Championships in Eagle. They were Kristen David of Sargent who placed 26th in the Sophomore Girls' race (50 riders state wide) and Cameron Roberts of Monte Vista who was 12th in the Freshman Boys' race (100 in the race, 270 state wide).
Mr. Stevenson, the head coach of the Rattlers, would like to thank the students, staffs and administrations from Sargent, Monte Vista, and Alamosa for their support of the team during this first year.
Congratulations to the high school varsity knowledge bowl team for placing second in the large school division October 12th's meet. Team members were Colby Self, Stephen Clutter, Evan Acosta, Trysten Ogden, Molly Nehring, and Blaine Gillespie.
Also, congratulations to the jv team for placing second in the large school jv division, as well! Team members were Justin Carr, Trinady Gonzales, Joce Lopez, and Sara Nehring.
District History Fair
On January 27th, Emma DeHerrera, Tammy Vigil, and Michael Savala partcipated in the annual District History Fair, part of the National History Day Competition. Hosted by the Adams State University with an event theme of "Conflict and Compromise in History". Emma DeHerrera placed 2nd in the Senior Paper division with her writing on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Tammy Vigil and Michael Savala placed 2nd in the Senior Group Exhibit division with their presentation board on World War II. Both entries will be headed to state on May 5th in Denver. Their faculty sponsor is Ms. Taylor Johnson.
